What is Hashimoto's?
When the immune system attacks the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck (thyroid).
Initially, inflammation of the thyroid causes a leak resulting in excess thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism). Over time, the inflammation prevents the thyroid from producing enough hormones (hypothyroidism).
Symptoms include
Skin: dryness or roughness
Hair: hair loss or dryness
Also common: constipation, depression, enlarged thyroid, fatigue, joint stiffness, muscle weakness, puffy eyes, sensitivity to cold, slow heart rate, swelling in extremities, or weight gain
Treatment with synthetic hormone medications is usually effective.
